Fair Day
Up until Saturday, I was a Mardi Gras virgin, but I popped my cherry at the Fair Day in Victoria Park. This family-friendly event really drew the crowds, with bright sunshine and fluffy clouds until the storm rolled in around 4pm. Pups competed in 'Doggywood', while their owners sipped icy-cold cocktails and had a laugh at the many hilarious and musically talented performances on the main stage. The day included food, rides, erotic candles, a bachelorette competition - everything you could want from a Fair Day and more.
A definite highlight was the taster performance from 'Lady Sings It Better'. This all-girl group perform 'femme reinventions of masculine anthems', and they're guaranteed to have you laughing out loud. They'll be playing at the
Black Cat Lounge until 8th March. Get in early because tickets are only $20 for the first week.
Lady Sings It Better
As they say, one taste is never enough, so it's lucky for me that there's plenty more
Mardi Gras still to come. I had no idea it was such a big event, encompassing film, performing arts, community events, and more.
One highlight I'll be sure to check out is the
Drag Races at Bondi Beach on 2nd March. Crowning the Drag King and Queen of Sydney looks set to be a hilarious adventure, involving events like 'Handbag Discus'.
If you prefer your Queer Politics with a dash of the serious,
Queer Thinking might be the event for you. Billed as a "fusion of academia, literature and ideas" that "places society under the pink microscope". It's on the 25th Feb, for just $15.
The Festival Bar has set up home at the
Oxford Hotel. If you don't know where to start, this is it. Unless, of course, you're too young to drink, in which case you should check out the
Youth Festival events instead.
Regardless of your sexuality, age or budget, I'm sure Mardi Gras has an event for you. If none of my suggestions tickle your fancy, check out the full list
here.
