In Sydney's lower North Shore, Greenwich a small peninsula boasting harbour views and wealthy residents, all within striking distance of the hustle of the city.
The inaccurate sense of idyllic remoteness is exacerbated by the leisurely passage of a
ferry crossing the ocean between Circular Quay and Greenwich. In reality, the drive from O'Connell Street in the very centre of the business district to the North Shore equivalent in O'Connell Street Greenwich takes only 14 minutes.
The reference to the twin O'Connell Streets was no accident; on the lower levels of the Greenwich O'Connell Street, is a grassed, waterfront reserve known as
Manns Point Park.
The major draw of the park is undoubtedly the extraordinary view of Sydney Harbour, as well as the appealing prospect of viewing the towering skyscrapers of the city from a distance. On a clear day, Parramatta River is a particularly lustrous blue, which sets it in stark contrast to the washed out gray of the CBD.
Of course, others visiting the park may be more taken with the fact that it is the base for
Greenwich Sailing Club.)
Manns Point is in some ways a community project.
Lane Cove Council allocates a group of Bushcare volunteers to deal with weeds that are found along the scenic location, allowing the native grasses and Coastal Banksia to be seen by visitors to the park. If you are a resident interested in taking part in the up-keep of the part, the group meets on the fourth Thursday of the month from 8.30am to 11.30am.
