The Skipper whooped as the rigid inflatable boat (RIB) zoomed alongside a pod of eight humpback whales, joining them on their twice-annual migration along Australia's East Coast.

Whale watching is immensely popular in Sydney and the harbor city's fortunate location on the whale migration path from Antarctica to northern areas like Cairns where they breed, means these ocean giants can be seen here for almost six months of the year.

combines awe inspiring sightings with exhilarating speed for an intimate group of 21 or less.

The "Ocean Extreme" RIB is powered by three 300 Horse Power engines and has an unrestricted speed permit. This means a faster trip to the whales plus an adrenalin pumping ride in between sightings.

Cruising past the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House from the first pick up location in Circular Quay the 12m RIB zips over to the second meeting point in Manly before racing through Sydney Heads in search of whales.

Incredibly Australia is home to at least 45 species of porpoises, dolphins and whales including nine baleen whales. On the open water participants keep a keen eye on the horizon looking mainly for Humpback whales which are the most commonly seen due to their short dive times.

Even for a first timer it's easy to see smoke-like puffs as a whale surfaces to blow or large splashes as these massive creatures weighing up to 50 tonnes breech.

The tour guide is knowledgeable and quickly points out the small dorsal fin on the whale's back, it's huge pectoral fins waving from the deep and its tail flukes – the underside of which is unique like a fingerprint.

Whaling in Australia was once common practice but since becoming a protected animal in 1965 the Humpback population has increased from hundreds to thousands.

It's likely to find a pod for a close encounter despite other whale watching boats and on one trip 13 whales were spotted all showing off their fascinating surface behavior.

A free ticket is offered if a whale isn't spotted on a tour, but a spectacular sighting is almost a guarantee. What is certain is the strong appreciation instilled after feeling the immense force of the ocean and witnessing these incredible marine mammals in their natural habitat.
