Over the Christmas break my husband and I went to Magnetic Island for a week. It was hard deciding where to stay as there were so many beautiful Bays on the island, but eventually we decided to stay at Nelly Bay. We got picked up at the ferry terminal and even though it was only a five-minute drive to our accommodation, it saved us from dragging all our luggage in the thirty-something-degree-heat. On the way, we were shown where the shops were, where to rent scooters and then our chauffeur pointed towards an abandoned street and said "There's a good Mexican restaurant down there". So that's how we discovered Man Friday and decided to go there for dinner that very night.

Man Friday is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, but they cater for all sorts of stomachs. If you don't fancy Mexican, they serve western bistro meals as well. Take your pick from juicy steaks, pork spare ribs and buffalo wings. They also have children's menu, seafood options and daily specials.

We ordered beef fajitas, chicken burrito, and a jug of sangria. Delicious, delicious and delicious! At first we thought the sangria was non-alcoholic, but when the Asian glow started to happen we figured there must be a bit of red wine in there. This intimate restaurant had a relaxed, chilled atmosphere, which went hand in hand with our tropical island getaway. Just perfect! There was so much food that it took us twice as long to walk back to our place, though we were quite thankful for the walk as it helped with our digestion a bit.

We loved this place so much that we went back again a few nights later to try their western bistro meals - buffalo wings and pork ribs. Again, the meals did not disappoint. The waitresses were attentive and friendly which made our dining experience very enjoyable. Casual dining with top service and superb food; what more could you ask for?

What's more, not only did they serve fantastic food, but also provide insect repellent (I almost got eaten alive before their waitress offered me some repellent). Yes, there were downsides to dining outdoors surrounded by trees, plants and wildlife. Nevertheless, mosquitoes were the least of my worries. Indoor dining was also available, but all booked out when we were there. If the same happens for you, at least have a look at their indoor dining area. They have all sorts of cool decorations.

Man Friday was one of the highlights of Magnetic Island. If you're ever there, don't forget to pay them a visit. Bookings essential.
