Last week I was walking down Gawler Place looking at the sky. I thought I knew the street like the back of my hand having walked it every day for the past 4 years. Oh how I was mistaken.

As my eyes grazed back down to earth, they landed on a white and red sign that I'd not seen before; Mama's Pierogi . I must have looked at the fold out street sign dozens of times before but the name had never jumped out at me.

Before it was Mama's Pierogi, it used to be a sandwich bar (I think) or some other nondescript coffee/lunch spot. From the road side it still looks the same. A bare shop window filled with a coffee machine. Not very eye catching unless your coffee addiction is getting the better of you.

A friend of mine has been assuring me that pierogies are God's gift to humanity for some time now so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered the surreptitious sign. Needless to say I ventured forth to indulge.

The interior was very simple. The front was filled with tables fitting 2 to 6 people while the back was home to a long high bench with stools. They've a setting for both solitary and group dining. The walls are lined with European city-scapes that boast enough detail to get lost in. All in all it looks like a quaint eatery without all that jazz.

I made my way to the menu, see below, and tried to make a suitable decision. Of course I did not. I bought my self the sour cherry pierogi and a coffee for lunch to go. They were absolutely delicious though. If you've never had pierogi before (like myself before this day) they're a thick skinned dumpling. People often try and compare them to Asian dumplings but they're nothing alike. These in particular were filled with cherries, set on a bed of sour cream (tasted like ricotta) and then drizzled with more of the same cherry filling. Divine!

After such a glorious experience I decided to take my pierogi expert with me to see how they compared to the real deal.

Under the expert's tutelage I decided to go with a small serve of the spinach and fetta pierogi, with toppings of crispy bacon, sour cream and wild mushroom sauce.

I also indulged in a cabbage roll.

I found them both to be absolutely delectable. The perfect combination of sauce and substance. Delicious! I would, however, like caution prospective diners that the wild mushroom sauce was a tad on the buttery side so if that's not your jam then I would suggest the chilli capsicum instead (yummm!).

To finish off, the expert said that these were the tastiest pierogi she'd had since her Grandmama cooked them for her in Canada. Thumbs up!
