Artists are given free reign to discover the luminous world in the new exhibition at
The Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art in Adelaide. The evocatively tilted Luminous World exhibition is currently touring Australia.
It uses a diverse range of media to showcase the subject of light. Images and artefacts collected explore the sky, earth, stars and spiritual energies.
This is a beautifully staged and balanced exhibition. The lower level has a wide open feel, with indigenous totems and large colour filled art works. A feather floats in mid air in the large scale inkjet print by Michael Riley. Drawing the viewer into higher places. Perhaps you are in the clouds, the atmosphere, or the gathering dawn light.
The second level has a far more ominous setting. With very dark walls and scant light. This gives an intentional sombre and bleak feel to walking among the stark back lit images on display.
There is also a cinema area entitled the Luminous Cinema. With a setting of the harsh dry light of the outback inter mingled with the dark black night and almost silver gum.
The Luminous world explores how light is interwoven into our lives. Revealing and exposing different landscapes and faces. Featured artists include Susan Norrie, Rosemary Laing, Howard Taylor, Dale Frank, Paddy Bedford, Bill Henson, Fiona Pardington, Brian Blanchflower, Brook Andrew, Timothy Cook and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.
A catalogue of the exhibition is available. However no art exhibition postcards, which I usually look forward to buying. The exhibition has free admission and is well worth discovering among Adelaide's art circuit. More info on the current exhibition is available
