The WWT London Wetland Centre is a wonderful oasis in the heart of London, which offers not only a wonderful day out for families but a brilliant resource for those interested in the study of nature.
If you are looking for something to do with the kids one weekend or during the holidays then look no further. With a seasonal programme running all year long there is always something to do at LWC.
The education team try to make sure that everything is kept fresh, but you will usually be able to participate in arts & crafts as well as regualr pond dipping sessions so you can find out what really lives in a wetland pond. As well as this, there will usually be something new - often a selection of walks, talks and games to get children fired up and inspired by nature.
These activities are always fun, but the staff at LWC are sneaky. Somehow, your kids will always end up leaving knowing more than they did before. Activities often last between 30-45 minutes, and can incorporate anything from interactive trails leading through the Centre, (sometimes with prizes at the end), to role play sessions like "Wetland CSI", (in which the kids had to figure out which footprints belonged to which animal or bird to solve the murder of a duck).
And as an environmental charity, WWT always makes sure that whatever they do is sustainable. So if you'd like to get away from activities that create waste, give LWC a try. Their arts and crafts use mainly recycled materials, and sometimes there is even the chance to use materials found on site, such as the willow they use for their weaving workshops.
If you're interested, check their
events page for details of their upcoming programme. This Christmas they also have huskies on site one weekend - see the website for details!
