It begins with a bit of wood, paper mache or perhaps cloth, then a puppeteer to provide movement and voice. And suddenly a character comes to life - a hero or villain who can make us laugh or move us to tears as we are caught up in the drama of their world.
Puppetry has a long
history - it can be traced back to 2500 BC - as a popular form of entertainment across a wide range of
cultures, and for nearly half a century the
Little Angel Puppet Theatre has been providing London with high quality puppet productions. From its rather humble beginning in derelict temperance hall in Islington it has grown into an internationally respected company with a large repertoire all created in the Theatre workshop.
Aimed at children and family audiences (though a few are specifically for adults) Little Angel presents a veritable rainbow of shows in-house as well as touring at home and abroad, and the Theatre plays host to performances by a wide variety puppetry companies from the UK and overseas. There's also an array of activities for children and families, such as puppet making workshops and the regular Saturday Puppet Club, and courses on offer for adults range from puppet making for beginners to professional masterclasses with
puppeteer superstars..
Whether human, animal, insect or other, the puppets of the Little Angel Theatre never fail to capture audience imagination, the beauty and diversity of their little worlds is completely enthralling. Perfect for the child in all of us.
