Often named one of the best independent book stores in Sydney,
Gleebooks offers more than a vast collection of books. Discover and explore the world of literature at one of their author conversations and book launches each week, held at their stores at Glebe, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville.
With a diverse event schedule, it will be difficult to find something that doesn't spark some intrigue. Book launches feature a wide range of genres from fiction, memoirs, historical, non fiction and so forth. Better yet book launches are free (unless otherwise noted on Gleebooks
Event page).
Some upcoming launches in August to look out for are "
The Pyschology of Musical Performance Anxiety" by Dianna Kenny, who explores the complexities of musical performance anxiety, "
Teen Film" by Catherine Driscoll, discussing how teen films have a place in society and "
Beside One's Self: Homelessness Felt and Lived" by Catherine Robinson, who offers an insightful look at the homeless we see on our city streets everyday.
The author conversation events are a great opportunity to gain insight into an author's work. Gleebooks keeps the events calendar varied with different topics each week. Some upcoming literary events include a conversation with
Paul Daley and Mike Bowers, authors of "
Armageddon: Two Men on the Anzac Trail." Another one to put in the diary is a discussion with
Diana Austin-Broos on her work "A Different Inequality" which delivers a debate about remote Aboriginal communities and the impact made by academics.
Don't be put off though if you're not much of a literary buff or book clubber. If you enjoy smart comedy then you're in for a treat on the first Saturday of each month. Gleebooks plays host to
Wit Large where people you might recognise from the television and stage tackle topics that might not usually come up at comedy shows like science, philosophy and art (no
bad airline jokes here). Past guests have included
Kitty Flanagan (
7pm Project, Good News Week) and
Lawrence Leung (
Choose Your Own Adventure) with host
Dave Bloustein, comedian and writer for
Good News Week.
What about the children you might wonder? Gleebooks has not forgotten this young and curious-minded demographic. During school holidays, you can expect some fun and engaging activities for the little ones, such as craft workshops where you can let your kid's imagination run wild with crayon rubbings, velvet art and other crafty adventures. Or book them in for a classic story time session with authors like
Ursula Dubosarsky, who has written many books for younger people such as of
The Golden Day Like books, there's something for everyone at Gleebooks events. Visit
