Lingua Franca is a glorious exhibition of paintings spanning four years in the life of the artist, Sarah Moller. These works also form the culminating exhibition for her PhD studies. "Lingua Franca" refers to a bridging language used to establish a route of communication between cultures. The paintings examine the gaze of a tourist, which most of us can well relate to. We subject ourselves to journeys with compressed time-frames through exotic time zones; under the guise of relaxation.
The images in this exhibition are inspired by photographs from in-between spaces, exploring the idea of temporary placement.
The works depict tourist transition zones; airports, ferry terminals, train stations and crowds visiting sights. The focus of many of the paintings is on movement as repetitive waves of tourists seek their own adventures, desperately documenting them in photographic form to preserve the encounter in their memories.
In a time where painters often seek to emulate the medium of photography Sarah Moller's works are unashamedly painted with a distinct emphasis on colour and form. Her paintings accentuate the colour upon the canvas, rhythmically enticing the viewer.
Sarah Moller's work is beautiful and appealing. I relate well to the themes she explores, especially the need for the traveler to collect trinkets to preserve the memory of their travels.
Tooth and Nail Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. The exhibition closes on Friday, 14 August.
