Spring has already sprung at in Pennant Hills and if you are in need of some time out may I suggest you pop into this quiet little garden in the middle of suburbia to become one with nature.

Located on a corner block and on a very busy road you may be forgiven for driving straight past the garden presuming it belonged to the house next door. However if you slow down and take the time to smell the roses, so to speak, you will be surprised to find that this little slice of paradise is in fact a public garden open to everyone all year round.

Dr Lilian Fraser was a botanist who had a distinguished career with the CSIRO. The garden in Pennant Hills belonged to her family since the early 1900's and when Dr Fraser passed away in the 1987 she bequeathed it to Hornsby Shire Council so that it could be used as a public garden for all to enjoy.

Being a botanist Dr Fraser has planted some weird and wonderful plants throughout the woodland garden. There are your ordinary garden variety daffodils and camellias but you will also find some intriguing specimens such as a handkerchief tree, fringe tree and smoke bush.

Each season brings about new blooms with Spring offering beautiful azaleas, wisteria, cherry trees and crab apples. You walk through the garden via little pathways that go this way and that discovering all of the beautiful blooms. It is the perfect place to play a game of hide and seek with children or to practice your photography - there are many perfect photo opportunities to be had throughout the large garden.

The garden has a few spots where you can throw down a rug and have a lovely picnic in the shade of an old tree or there are seats scattered throughout the area where you can have a quiet contemplation or read a book. There aren't any toilets or bins in the gardens so you must remove what you bring, and remember to take nothing but photos, and leave nothing but footprints.

There is a small community building located within the garden called "the shed." This may be hired for small functions such as birthday parties, and the garden would also be the ideal venue for an intimate garden wedding. Guided tours for groups can also be arranged through the Hornsby Shire Council.

If your own garden is a bit lacking and you would like some inspiration why not spend time in Lilian Fraser's garden, have a picnic, take some photos, enjoy nature and go home grateful that someone else has to do the weeding.
