Cancer is a deadly group of diseases plaguing many people in Australia . Blood cancer and related blood disorders alone claim more than 60,000 annually and every day, another 31 people join the bandwagon countrywide. The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia has been working tirelessly to raise awareness of the disease and challenges face by patients and carers all over the country, from the big cities like Sydney to remote townships like Dampier in Western Australia.

As that number continues to rise in the face of limited direct government funding, the Foundation relies on community-minded individuals and organisations for financial support. One of the ways it raises funds for patient care as well as research is through its 'Light The Night' each year in hope that one day a cure can be found for everyone with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

'Light the Night' is the only twilight lantern walk which offers an fun evening out while supporting a good cause. It is open to everyone, young and old and of any fitness level as the leisurely walk takes less than an hour to complete. There are also stalls providing food and drinks to accompany the FREE live entertainment.

The charity event is characterised by hand-held lanterns of blue, white and gold and a mass walk at twilight to support the present-day victims and remember past sufferers. You may think that the Mid-Autumn Festival has returned to Canberra with this unique lantern event.

As you reminisce of the blessings brought by 2,000 candles during the recent Canberra Nara Candle Festival , think upon the lanterns that offer a glow of hope for patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders in ACT.

Instead of staying home and hugging the television on 8 November, rally your family and friends, buy a lantern or two and take a walk in Kings Park. Simply visit the website to register or phone: 1800 500 088 for more details. And if you can't attend the walk, help spread the word by sharing this article around.
