A multi-talented legend, Florence Broadhurst, was born in rural Queensland, Australia in 1899. Broadhurst started performing in various towns and cities in Queensland and she was thereafter performing professionally on stage in India, South-East Asia and China in early 1920s. In 1926, Broadhurst founded Broadhurst Academy - a modern academy of arts in Shanghai.
Broadhurst returned to Australia and settled in Sydney where she started and exhibited paintings enthusiastically and turned her creativity into a business opportunity. With a good eye for colour and design, she started her hand printed wallpaper company in 1959 using her own designs and successionally revolutionised the industry field. Florence's charms and skill soon led her to build up an impressive clientele such as Qantas and Estee Lauder Cosmetics.
Broadhurst is notable for her bold, bright and colourful design – peacock and floral are some of her signature designs. With the high level of excellence, her design work has been used on the walls and furnishings of fashionable homes and boutiques from Sydney to New York. Included in the book are some of her distinguished designs which are stunning and beautiful.
Late in the afternoon of 16 October 1977, seventy-eight year-old Florence Broadhurst was tragically murdered. Her killer was never found. Her designs are still current and they are widely used in textiles and interior furnishings. Like her designs, her life is colourful, leaving us all remarkable treasures and riches in designs.
