Let There Be Light: Winter Art Exhibition

When Brian Hatch was asked how long it took him to paint his award-winning entry in this year's exhibition by The Cathedral of Saint Stephen Art Group (COSSAG) , he had to smile. 'About 60 years,' he said of And There Was Light, which is so resplendent in vibrant sunrise colours, it practically glows.

Hatch is one of 60 artists exhibiting in the Let There Be Light art exhibition, which is bringing some lightness and brightness to the CBD amid the gloom of winter. Other artists whose work takes pride of place within the Francis Rush Centre on Elizabeth Street include Tricia Smout, Terry Summers (whose work Lamplight won second prize), David Nixon, Michelle Bowden and Tulasi Powell. The free exhibition featuring affordable, original artworks, is open to all.

COSSAG (Cathedral of Saint Stephen Art Group) is an art group not of artists but of art appreciators. The group started about seven years ago and since then has hosted an annual exhibition, as well as a public lecture, a fair trade market and (added this year) an ecumenical women's breakfast.

The COSSAG committee is made up of volunteers who fundraise all year so these events can be held. The yearly exhibition is also an art prize. 'Each year we try to increase the prize money and sponsors are always welcome,' says artist and committee member Michelle Bowden, The group focuses on the intersection of art and faith and was inspired by the collection of contemporary art in St Stephen's cathedral.
