Hamilton, Ontario has a surprising diversity of food experiences and I was recently delighted to discover .

Lynne Jury, originally from London, England, runs this charming tea room. She also specializes in designing and baking award-winning wedding cakes, in addition to making her own home made jams and jellies which are served in her tea room.

Lynne's tea room is located at 154 James Street South, a little ways up the James Street hill from Hamilton's down town.

In today's bustling world, indulging in a traditional afternoon tea is pretty much unheard of. Afternoon tea is a pause for tea with sandwiches, scones, and cakes, usually around 4:00 p.m. Many of us are just finishing our work day around that time and rushing home to family to make supper.

Still, over time, there has come about a ritual and etiquette associated with afternoon tea. Lynne has many of these posted on her website under William Hanson's Tips for Afternoon Tea (William Hanson is the UKs current leading expert in etiquette.)

My favourite tip is that it is incorrect to raise your little finger when drinking tea!

The Menu features traditional English tea sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, cakes and/or cupcakes, and tea or coffee.

The tea menu also has some very unique teas, such as Winter Rose (Persian tea infused with rose petals and lavender), and Ginger Cookie (black tea infused with ginger with a touch of caramel).

I enjoyed the scones with cream, and home made jam, and Earl Grey tea. The scones were perfection, with just a hint of sweetness, the cream utterly divine. This was really quite decadent. (2 scones with jam and cream, pot of tea $8.00)

Due to her very busy wedding cake business, the tea room is By Reservation only so please call ahead if you want to get together with friends for a special treat. Phone: 905-296-3223 She also hosts private tea parties.

This lovely tea room, hand decorated with Lynne's personal touches, is an oasis of calm and civility in our fast paced world. It's a wonderful stop for tea at any time.
