L'Espresso Cafe, Ballarat

Finding a good cafe in a regional area of Victoria can be quite easy, or quite difficult, depending on your knowledge of the areas. I'll make the job that much easier for you: if you are a coffee enthusiast, a regional Victoria traveller, or just looking for a decent place to hang your hat over a stellar coffee, Ballarat's L'Espresso is the place to be.

Located just apart the main shopping strip of Sturt Street, L'Espresso has been a Ballarat institution for a long time. Everyone seems to know about it, from the school kids to the 9-5 workers. Everyone knows about L'Espresso, and everyone knows just how good the place is. For several reasons, I may add.

Firstly, and most importantly, the coffee. Once you've taken a seat in the cosy, wood-lined room, or outside on the street, order the coffee of your choice. It's not hard to be pleased with the caffeine hits here: every single time I've had a caffe latte, an espresso, a long black or a long macchiato, I have not once been unimpressed. And even better, when you're finished, the friendly floor staff ask you if you'd like another. Yes please!

Also, the food is typically good. For an establishment that has such a good first impression, it carries nicely into the menu. A selection of Italian favourites are on the list, all made with love and care. It can get a little out there with experimentation, but a visit demands one tries at least something off the list.

This all brings me to one of the more exciting and exotic features of L'Espresso: the CD collection. One look inside the window walking past gets many people excited, as you can see a whole wall filled to the brim with albums by jazz greats such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. This is what pulled me into the cafe in the first place: simply to look at the CDs and marvel at such a cool idea. Specialising in jazz, blues, bebop, etc., L'Espresso practically begs you to grab your coffee and go wandering along the CD wall, wondering which album you'll buy next.

For a mix of good service, amazing coffee and a wall filled with albums (you don't get that in Melbourne!), visit L'Espresso. And if you're a Ballarat native, make this a regular spot. You won't regret it.

I enjoyed the food at L'espresso too. For lunch one day we had a tasty ham hock and vegetable minestrone served with garlic bread, as well as scrambled eggs with smoked salmon served on sourdough. Prices were generally between $15 to $20 per dish. My friends have also dined there for breakfasts and says that the breakfast menu is fantastic.

Apart from the good food, we enjoyed the cosy environment. The only issue I had was that part of the indoor dining areas were poorly lit - so much so that part of the visual appeal of the food was lost. Nevertheless, L'espresso is unique and stands out as one of the better cafes on Sturt St (which has many interesting cafes).

Just don't leave it to late in the afternoon then the coffee is warm and you are asked to sit in the back of the cafe (it was a cold day last month) and I felt very rushed. Late comers after me did insist on a table near window.
Cafe Lekker just around in Doveton Street North is fabulous, service friendly and keen to chat about the day. Food was delicious and they heped me with my lactose and gluten issues. Lekker means delicious in dutch and they cetainly lived up to the name. I was told by a paramedic who resides in Ballarat that Cafe Lekker was her favourite so i made it a point to check it out.
Racers a cafe opposite Lake Wendouree cnr of Webster street, is a firm favourite of mine. A lovely long walk and coming to Racers was like coming to a friend's home, welcomed warmly and my dog was always catered for.
I Pet and Home Sit full time so I travel across Australia and have the delightful opportunity to visit and partake in many, many cafes.
Ballarat has been an amazing place to spend 4 wonderful weeks walking and watching the world go by in Cafes, and Racers (cyclist stop there) was my very favourite 5 stars. Their Mixed Nut Tart was also a wonderful treat after taking a lacteeze for all the lactose!

I must agree with Winnie re: lighting in L'Espresso there wasn't any where I was told to sit! I love to read the local rag in peace as I enjoy my koffie!
