A small land-locked nation surrounded by Myanmar, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos is much less known than its larger, more frequently-visited neighbours. However, like these countries Laos possesses a rich and ancient cultural heritage, although poverty and social inequality creates challenges for many of its citizens.

Based here in Australia, Global Hands is a charity that aims to improve living conditions for children throughout Asia, with its special focus currently being Laos. This year's Laos Art Exhibition is a fund-raising event for Global Hands' work throughout the region, especially in relation to the country's students.

The exhibition is the inspiration of local student Jodie Mortadza who during a recent trip to Laos saw first-hand the challenges that many people experience just to make ends meet, let alone provide a quality education for their children. Using her passion for art, Jodie wants to make a difference in Laos, especially in the lives of young people from remote communities.

The lack of suitable student lodgings is a huge problem for many girls in rural areas who either miss out on an education or have to live far from home, often in terrible conditions such as insecure makeshift shacks. Proceeds from the Laos Art Exhibition will go towards providing safe and secure dormitory accommodation for young female students in Laos while they complete their schooling, as well as art education for two deaf students.

Located in a beautiful venue in the heart of Northbridge, the Laos Art Exhibition is certain to be a unique and vibrant cultural event with something for everyone. As well as the mixed-media exhibition, there will also be art for sale, live music, a traditional Laotian-style night market (with gorgeous products handmade in Laos) and plenty of refreshments. Best of all, the proceeds are all for a very good cause, helping kids who really need a good start in life.

Whether you're an art-lover, have fond memories of a trip to Laos, or are simply looking for something different to do on Friday night, this wonderful art exhibition is certainly a great event to jot into your social calendar. Here in Australia we're fortunate to have access to so many first-class educational facilities, and supporting this event is a great opportunity to share the love around.

The 2015 Laos Art Exhibition and cultural evening will be taking place at the Central Institute of Technology Art Gallery at 12 Aberdeen Street in Northbridge on Friday July 10th, from 6pm until 8pm. Entry is $30.00, with all proceeds going towards the above-mentioned projects.
