Can you have too many Lao-Thai restaurants? If you love your Papaya Salad, Roast Duck Curry, Basil Chilli Chicken, BBQ Marinated Ox Tongue, Larb Salad, Deep Fried Quail or just your bog standard Red or Green Curry, there's plenty of choices out west where you can taste test different versions of your favourite Lao-Thai (or is that Thai-Lao?) dishes.
The great thing for local residents and explorers of Lao-Thai cuisine is how close all these restaurants are located to each other. From the Lao-Thai Luammit restaurant at Fairfield to the Lotus Flower Lao-Thai at Mount Pritchard, you need not travel more than 10 kilometres. And you won't find all find these restaurants on main streets. Most of Lao-Thai restaurants seem to pop up in all sorts of out of the way, quiet, cheaper rent corner shop type locations.
While the Holy Basil at Canley Heights is a standout with its 'up market' inner city chic decor, the average Lao-Thai restaurant in the area is very modestly decorated with matching prices. What is fairly consistent is the remarkably similar menu items, although most boast house specialties such as Pad Thai-Lao's Pu Pad Pong Karee, (Crab meat in aromatic yellow curry sauce) or the Twelve Spices 'Yum' (specialty sweet and sour salad with prawns and pork with grated papaya and carrot). Whatever the case, it's unlikely any lover of Thai-Lao (or Lao-Thai) will come away disappointed no matter what restaurant they dine in. In the unlikely event you're not satisfied, no worries, you won't have far to go to find another.
