The Chinese New Year is a very visual celebration and never will that be more true than in 2015, when a series of larger than life lanterns will come to Australia for the first time and be on display next to Sydney Harbour for ten days, to correspond with the annual event.

The lanterns, which have been made out of fabric and wire just like traditional ones, were created by Chinese artist Xia Nan. They were originally made for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and have previously only been shown in China and the United Kingdom.

However, from Friday February 13 to Sunday February 22, from dusk till midnight, they will be lit up at Dawes Point Park , beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge in The Rocks. There's 90 in total and they reach 2.1 metres high.

The figures include women and children arranged in family groups and the name of the exhibition comes from the 8,000 strong army of terracotta warriors and horses that were discovered to be guarding the soul of China's first emperor, buried underground in the Shaanxi Province.

In 2015, the Chinese New Year will take place on Thursday February 19 but the City of Sydney's Chinese New Year Festival will run from Friday February 13 to Sunday March 1. You can view all events scheduled to run during these dates here (they include feats, dragon boat races, dances and a parade).
