"There is nothing--absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." said the Water Rat in Wind in the Willows. He was right!

Last holidays we asked my son's classmates if they wanted to go boating at the Lane Cove National Park. We packed a picnic lunch and made sure there were enough adults to supervise each vessel and off we went.

The Lane Cove Boatshed hires out row boats, pedal boats, kayaks and canoes, and even push bikes. They take safety seriously and of course, provide life jackets in all shapes and sizes.

My eldest, not wanting to be stuck with the young 'uns, took off in a kayak.

As I had the two year old, we were in a row boat and the others took a mix of pedal boats and row boats. The kids could switch over the course of the afternoon, and so they got to try different types of boats (and we mums realised our legs got very sore after the work out pedalling, once the kids gave up!)

Although our squeals and laughter spoiled the serenity, it was a splendid afternoon for all, a new experience for some, and a fantastic way to enjoy the Australian bush setting for our inner city kids.
