Lakes Entrance is a popular destination in the Gippsland region, about a four and a half hour drive east from Melbourne.

Many familes come for the fishing and the views but even if you don't fish, it's the perfect small town getaway. Here are a few different activities you can get up to besides fishing:

1. Crabbing
Okay, not too different from fishing, but it is a little easier to do! The Lakes area is known as a good spot for catching small sand crabs. They're small but their meat is quite tasty.

Make sure you have a Victorian Fisher's Licence and a crab hoop net that complies with the regulations . We couldn't find any at camping stores in Melbourne, but the Lakes Entrance fishing stores sell them for around $15-$20.

You simply hook uncooked chicken onto the net, throw the net into the water whilst it's tied to the pier, wait a little, then pull up your net to see if there are any crabs.

Bullock Island is a popular place to head to for crabs but you can also catch some off the piers in the main town. It's usually better to go in the evening or late at night. It's easy to do but sometimes it all just depends on luck.

2. Cycling
To explore the town in a different way, we hired some bikes from a local company called Venture Out . For half a day (four hours) it cost $35 per bike.

It was winter, so they only open the store if they have bookings. It was great that they were able to arrange someone to hand us the bikes as the owner was away on holiday. The gentleman was also very helpful in adjusting our bikes to suit us.

We weren't after anything challenging, so we were recommended Lake Bunga Beach and Kalimna Jetty for simple rides with great views.

If you're a little more adventurous/experienced, Venture Out also run mountain bike tours. For more information click here .

**[/LINK]The Lakes area has some great views, but I wouldn't say it has many hikes to explore them. So we tried a bit of geocaching - I do mention this activity often, but it's a really great way of exploring unknown places you wouldn't normally go to.

Download the Geocaching app and go find some hidden treasures or 'caches' left by other users. We found many caches and a lot were located at lookouts and scenic spots in the town.

It was also perfect for a rainy day adventure (if you don't mind getting a little wet) as we were in and out of the car all day, travelling from place to place.

**4. Eat by the lakes
**The main road in town is accompanied by a stretch of grass with picnic tables by the lake. It's the perfect spot to watch the boats passing by or the ripples of the lake.

Grab some local fish and chips or bring your own food/picnic and take in that small, fishing town atmosphere.

Another spot we discovered about 15-20 minutes from the main town was Nungurner. As it was out of town, it was less crowded and even more peaceful. There were BBQ's, toilets and a picnic area, making it perfect for a lunch stop.

5. Lakes Entrance Surf Club Foreshore Market
On the first Sunday of every month the surf club runs a market along the popular foreshore of town.

You'll find many stalls including coffee, food, fishing gear, pet clothes, jewellery and more.

Luckily the day we visited was beautiful and sunny, ensuring the lake and foreshore made a magnificent backdrop for the market.

We've already visited Lakes Entrance twice and there's no doubt we will return again. I'd love to hear what you enjoy doing in the area in the comments below.
