La Gaffe by day
The first time I stumbled upon La Gaffe, I almost didn't go inside. I was looking for an inexpensive meal at a nice place – however, I was sure this would be over my budget. My expectations were delightfully exceeded, and I have continued to return for many years.
The warmth that you are greeted with from the moment you walk in the door, makes you feel as though you are part of the family. Although it is a French restaurant, you will soon learn (by reading the Story of La Gaffe in their menu) that it is actually an Italian run business.
Although I paid only around £7 for my Risotto, I got a much larger portion than I bargained for and ended up sharing it. The attention to detail and skill that they demonstrate through their menu is better than you will find at most Michelin rated restaurants. There is sure to be something for everyone on the menu, whether you are looking for fish, meat, pasta, or a selection of their imaginative starters.
I was shocked to find out after looking at their website years ago that they are also a hotel. It does not feel like your typical restaurant within a hotel. There is a separate bar, and the dining area is decorated to make you feel as though you are sitting in a da Vinci painting.
Stop in for a chilled glass of wine, and you will soon realize that this was no "Mistake" and see for yourself how La Gaffe has become a part of history in Hampstead.
