Dig out your flares and hula hoops, because from the 26th to the 28th of March, the Lower Hunter Valley will be shaking and jiving to the old school rhythms of the
Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival.
It is a well known fact that anybody over 50 complains incessantly about the pace of modern life and how "things were better in my day". Well, thanks to its rock 'n' roll, classic cars,
dances,
stalls and competitions, the festival will be brimming with the spirit of the 'good old days', a time when one could leave their front door unlocked and contract polio.
That's right – you'll be flashing back to the fab fifties, the decade in which things were left to Beaver, and the swinging sixties, when so much fun was had that no one can remember a damn thing.
One of the highlights of this year's
program will be the
Famous Fifties, a talent quest in which participants impersonate stars from that most wholesome of eras, such as drug-dependent floozy Marilyn Monroe, hedonistic substance abuser Johnny O'Keefe, or sex, drug and fried chicken fiend Elvis Presley.
Another highlight will be the
Car Show & Shine, a chance for car enthusiasts to show off their pride and joy while competing for prizes. Only pre-1974 models will be allowed, as this event will pay homage to the golden age of motoring, when gas-guzzling death traps ruled the roads. Ah, the memories...
Undoubtedly the classiest part of the program will come when an exclusive collection of couples
renew their vows with what have been termed "'Vegas style' weddings". Whether that means the King will be officiating, the participants will be intoxicated or the groom will lose his bride during a hand of poker is impossible to say, but one thing that can be guaranteed is that the Fonz would approve.
