You can take your pick of African restaurants in Footscray and you definitely won't be disappointed if you choose Konjo Café and Restaurant.

This is a friendly café with good service and a simple, modern interior decorated with some photos from Africa and African music videos playing from a TV screen.

The Ethiopian menu features fresh, flavoursome dishes accompanied by the traditional injera bread.

You can order individual dishes, both meat and vegetarian (vegetarian and vegan options labelled accordingly), a platter or breakfast (Ethiopian or continental varieties). On the day I visited, a chocolate lava cake was on special for those who fancy dessert.

On Friday and Saturdays lunchtimes you can indulge from the buffet menu, featuring over 12 dishes for the bargain price of $15. The staff explain all the dishes and advise on any dietary requirements. My particular favourite were the lentils.

I was also brought a cup of delicious sweet, spiced tea.

I am not a coffee drinker but Konjo is known for its traditional Ethiopian grown coffee and you can even book a complete coffee ceremony to see the beans washed, roasted and brewed on hot coal.

There is a function room available for bookings.

There is also a Konjo in Collingwood, although currently closed for refurbishments. Keep an eye out when it re-opens soon as you may be interested in their live music night on a Friday where you can enjoy your meal and the sound of Ethio-Jazz and other traditional music.

Reasonably priced with pleasant service, not to mention the food, which I would highly recommend.
