A relatively new concept,
Kids at the Arts Centre is a fabulous program of activities exposing kids aged between 3 and 12 to a wonderful variety of performing arts experiences. It opened in August last year – and has been a smashing success.
While the events program for July onwards was in development at the time of writing (and will be on the website now), previous activities have included Pigs, Bears & Billy Goats Gruff fresh from Broadway and The Dragon Child, a world-first tour from Beijing by China Children's Art Theatre.
Events range from small-scale shows to main stage performances. Also popular are indigenous storytelling and music, and a whole heap of interactive workshops, like family portraits, vegetable puppetry, didgeridoo and new media.
Stuck for an idea for your child's next birthday party? How about hosting one at the
Alfred Brash Soundhouse, where kids get to make their very own piece of music, complete with backing or their own singing if desired. Using the latest software, they can create and mix music in any style that grabs them, whether it be dance, rock, techno or hip-hop.
You never know, you might just have the next
Justin Beiber on your hands. If so, good luck!
Look out for a more extensive program during school holidays.
The Arts Centre is a five-minute stroll from Flinders Street Station and the gateway to
Southbank Promenade, where you'll find a whole lot more fun things to see and do.
