Tue 16 May 2017 - Sun 21 May 2017

The Kernewek Lowender comes around every second year, celebrating the heritage of the Copper Coast towns. This year the Kernewek will be held from May 19th to 21st, 2017 . Many people take the opportunity to dress up in traditional costume . The official opening, Friday May 19th, will feature a street parade in Moonta, with Maypole Dancing and Cornwall's oldest traditional dance the Furry Dance performed by local school children in traditional costume.

See something new:
The Art Prize , sponsored by Newbery Chemists will be held at Ascott Theatre in Kadina . $10 entry to the official opening on Friday May 19th at 6:30pm includes refreshments. See the artworks and meet the artists, before the prizes (totalling over $10,000) are awarded. The exhibition runs from Friday to Wednesday May 24th.

Listen and enjoy tradition:
Gathering of the Bards, will be on Saturday May 20th at 2:30pm in Davies Square, Wallaroo. Enjoy Cornish language songs and costume. Admission is free.

Moonta Mines Uniting Church , formerly the Methodist Church built in 1865, hosts the Metropolitan Male Choir , on May 21st. Doors open at 12:30pm, entry is free (you might like to make a donation to the upkeep of this significant historic building ).

Learn something new:
Learn to say something Cornish! Cornish Language lessons will be held on Wednesday May 17th at Moonta Mines Church Hall for those over 15, at a cost of $15, inclusive of booklet and morning tea.

Learn how to make your own Cornish Pasties at the Uniting Church Hall, Emu Street, Wallaroo, Wednesday May 17h or Saturday May 20th. These sessions are always popular so book in before they book-out! $20 covers costs.

Get up close to living history:
The Cavalcade of Cars showcases classic, veteran and vintage motor vehicles. In 2017 the Cavalcade will leave from Wallaroo at 10am on Sunday May 21st, making its was to Moonta and then Kadina. After touring through the towns, the Cavalcade accumulate on the Kadina oval and for a small entry fee the public can inspect the cars up close.

Attend to tradition:
Dressing of the Graves is an important local tradition where ancestors are remembered and school choirs sing and place flowers. Dressing of the graves will be held in the week leading up to the Kernewek Lowender, on Tuesday May 16th at Green Plains Cemetery (10:30am), and Wallaroo Cemetery (1:30pm), and on Wednesday May 17th at Kadina Cemetery (10:30am) and Moonta Cemetery (1:30pm).

Try something unusual:
History and Ghost Walks (see page 12) will be held daily from Thursday 18th May to Sunday 21st, in Wallaroo, from 2pm - 4pm. There will also be special Ghost Experience tours and lock-ins presented by Spirited SA in Wallaroo , and in Moonta .

The historically significant cemeteries of the region are worth a visit any time of the year.

Connect with tradition:
The Blessing of the Waters ceremony recognises the sacrifices of early settlers who arrived by sea, and who worked in building the towns of the Copper Coast, working in the mining, smelting and shipping industries that were fundamental to settlement in South Australia. In 2017 the Blessing of the Waters will be held on Sunday May 21st on the lawns overlooking Wallaroo's Office Beach (near the new sea water swimming enclosure ). Commencing at 8am, this is a free event.

But wait! There's much, much more happening over the weekend of the Kernewek Lowender ! Exhibitions, displays, poetry and prose, recitations, special guest speakers - many who travel from the opposite side of the world for this occasion - concerts, comedy, performances, competitions, book launch, music, song and dance, wining and dining, markets, open gardens, walks, quilting and other hand-crafts on display or for sale. Many events include refreshments in the admission price. Check out the 2017 program of events !
