I always like to offer you something a bit different - so here is something for those who fancy a couple of chills to perfectly complement the hot summer weather.
Located within one of the oldest cemeteries in London, Kensal Green Catacombs is a virtual underground city devoted to the dead of old London town.
For a small donation, the
Friends of Kensal Green will take those willing to go on a trip into the catacombs below Kensal Green Cemetery. The Necropolis below houses some of the most famous corpses to lie under the soil of London, including Shakespearian actors, scientists, admirals and even violinists. Themed tours are available for those who want to know individual elements of the history of the Necropolis and its inhabitants, with themes including such areas as 'The friends of Charles Dickens', 'Aristocrats and Royals' and 'Ne'er Do Wells' (which basically means those who lived criminal lives). Each tour is expected to last around 2 hours.
It is advised to take a torch and wear sturdy walking boots when you decide to visit the catacombs, as the cemetery is in disrepair in parts, though the catacombs themselves are relatively clean and safe.
Don't forget to arrive early, as the catacomb entrance is located in the centre of the cemetery, and so therefore requires a bit of a walk (remember the cemetery is BIG) - and importantly, don't get any ideas of filming further sequels to the Blair Witch Project down there, as there is no photography allowed - enjoy.
