Every lunch time at my workplace it's the same; 'I'm heading over to 'our' little shop, does anyone want anything?'

I have been sticking to my crackers and cheese rather than a fatty burger and oily chips but after watching my co workers return to the lunch room with their load of crispy looking chips and fresh sandwiches for the past few weeks, I decided to give it a try.
Kelvin Grove Seafood & takeaway
Kelvin Grove's little secret

Yesterday, I stuffed a ten in my pocket and ventured across the road to Kelvin Grove Seafood and Takeaway. The small store was packed, from tradies in their bright orange, to funeral directors in suits and even bikini babes. The Vietnamese shop workers were working hard behind that counter.

The small store was stuffy and hot and as I sweated, I scanned the four large black boards for my perfect lunch. I decided upon a chicken, cheese, avocado and sweet chilli sauce toastie and small serving of chips. As I waited, I checked out the cabinet close to the ice cream freezer loaded with fish, great sized fish cocktails, (not the little fish balls you get disappointed with at some takeaway places), dim sims, spring rolls and even battered savs that you can choose to have fried. A huge piece of cod cost only $4.50 and the old fashioned battered sav will cost you a two dollar coin and sixty cents.

I watched the young lady make my lunch, and let me tell you, they don't do things sparingly here. My bread was loaded with chicken, half an avocado, 'real' cheese and plenty of sauce. And after she had toasted it and handed it to me over the counter, it looked as if there was an oversized burger in the paper bag rather than a toasted sandwich.

Workers were constantly entering, setting off the entrance 'beeping' every few minutes and as I left and carried my lunch back to the cool of air con at work, more cars were pulling into the street by the small store.

My sandwich tasted great and the chips were equally good. Perfectly crispy and golden and they had that 'crunch' that you only see on TV commercials. And my 'small' serving was big enough to feed the clan at work who kept reaching over and helping themselves.

If you work in the Newmarket, Alderley or Kelvin Grove Area, this local gem is well worth a lunch visit.
