When I enrolled the kids for kayaking, the instructor asked if I would like to give it a go too. It's the year of the Horse so I am bound to accept all challenges that come my way. Even though the surrounds are gorgeous at Westerfold's park, kayaking was certainly a lot better than standing on the bank of the river for a couple of hours.

The safety procedures and getting geared up came first. I admit I cooled on the idea when I was taught how to get out of the kayak if it rolled. My son fell out when reaching too far in a ball game. This taught me a valuable lesson for life. Mind you he repeated this act with a bit of encouragement later. He didn't seem to mind the close encounter with the cold and dirty Yarra River.

I found out there's a lot to kayaking. For a start, it seems those whose deign the kayaks make sure they don't go straight! And even when considerable effort is exerted and you think you have the hang of it, it defies strength and skill! I might be over exaggerating my abilities, but hope these are judged on my enthusiasm.

Honestly, I don't mind the fact that I was amongst a bunch of kids or that I didn't make it to the rapids. Everything seems to go a bit slower for me these days. Here are some of my achievements: I got in and out of the kayak without slipping or getting wet. I learnt how to paddle sideways, stop the boat, forwards (sometimes), turn left and right. In fact turning was my specialty. Agreed, it would have been better to have a tad more control over turning.

I managed to carry a kayak (some didn't). True, they were minors. But also I did not fall in! I consider this to be a major achievement. Despite this I did get pretty wet. When I inquired as to how to stop the water from coming off my paddle into my lap I was told I had to go faster. I guess that tells you something!

The coach, Warwick, was incredibly patient and encouraging with such inexperienced, albeit eager novices. With young teenage coaching assistants it was almost a 1 to 1 teacher to student ratio. This was a great family activity and holiday exercise and I now have a certificate to prove I have completed level 1 training.

Kayaking is available through Canoeing Victoria for children and adults of all skills levels. Certificates and a passport (level record) are provided. Remember to pack a change of clothes. I'd love to master the rapids (and achieve a six pack like Warwick) but that might mean a few more hours of instruction.
