I'm convinced that showtime brings out the child within each of us. The sights, sounds and smells evoke memories of days when we were young and life was simpler - when a stick of fairy floss and a pony ride were enough to put a smile on our face. Showtime was, and still is, a time when country life comes to town, and families unite to experience all its magic. While large events such as the Perth Royal Show are colourful, chaotic and noisy, smaller ones out in the country differ little from days long gone when families could spend an affordable day together, looking at the farm animals, enjoying a picnic and having a few carnival rides.

If you love country shows, but don't feel like travelling too far out of Perth to enjoy the experience, you're in luck as in less than a week one of Western Australia's favourite shows will be taking place. Situated at the eastern boundary of Perth, up in the Darling Ranges, historic Kalamunda possesses a delightful fusion of city and country life, and it's here on March 27th that its 117th annual show will be held at the lovely old Kostera Oval.

Beginning on Friday afternoon at 5.00pm, Kalamunda Show will kick off with an awesome range of entertainment on the stage, loads of great stalls and activities, and of course, all the fun of Sideshow Alley. There will be something of interest for every member of the family – from the tiniest toddler to the most elderly matriarch. Topping off the evening, there will be a spectacular fireworks display that will be sure to leave everyone totally awestruck. The gates close at 10.00pm, but if you're eager for another dose of showtime magic you won't have long to wait, as it resumes at 10.00am the following morning.

Saturday's program is also jam-packed with an exciting range of things to see and do. All the usual show-time favourites will be there – heaps of family-friendly activities, great entertainment, interesting exhibits, plenty of events in the show ring, loads of crazy rides and all the frenetic energy of the sideshows. Free entertainment just for the kids will include Scitech's travelling roadshow, the Kangaroo Creek Gang, a Chinese dragon dance, clowns, eco fairies, the Scouts' climbing wall and obstacle course, and a special kids' corner with Fat Cat, story-telling and a magic show. Another all-time favourite is an animal nursery where children can pet various kinds of cuddly creatures.

Older visitors will enjoy wandering through the exhibition hall, admiring the displays of horticulture, art, handicrafts, floral art, photography, preserves, cookery and much more that have been entered into this year's competitions. A unique feature of this year's show is a photographic exhibit to commemorate the 100th anniversary of ANZAC. In this connection, there will also be a presentation by the 10th Light Horse Regiment. At 8.30pm the fireworks display will be held, bringing to a close an exciting and action-packed day, and this year's Kalamunda Show.

In a nutshell, if you're always on the look-out for fun places to go and things to do around Perth, this traditional country show, up in the Perth Hills, is an event that you'll definitely not want to miss. Late March is an ideal time to savour showtime magic, as the weather is quite temperate, while budget-conscious locals will appreciate the fact that smaller shows are never as expensive as the larger Big City events. Entry for this year's Kalamunda Show is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for concession card holders. Children 16 years or younger are free when accompanied by a paying adult, or $5.00 if unaccompanied.

To enjoy the unforgettable experience of a country show without leaving Perth, be sure to mark this event in your social calendar. Kalamunda Show will be held at Kostera Oval, situated at the corner of Canning and Recreation Roads. To find out more, take a look at the #xl_xr_page_index ">Kalamunda Show website .
