Journey - Game Review (PS3)

Journey had plenty of hype surrounding it, mostly for being completely different to most of the big names that we have seen on consoles for the past couple of years. It was very cheap for a game, at £10 you can't really go wrong with giving it a try.

When I first loaded the game, I knew immediately that one of the strong points was the epic visuals, the vast expanse laid out before you was incomparable to other titles I had played before. The vast desert you start in left me in awe.

Much of the story remains a mystery to me still after completing the game. As a player you know only where you must go, yet you have the freedom to explore wherever you like. It is this open ended travel, combined with a beautiful soundtrack that leaves you hooked into the journey your character is undertaking. You feel the importance of completing the journey for both you and the character you control.

This character attachment is a difficult factor to integrate into games, with graphical barriers and emotional differences between virtual reality and reality. Journey has no vocals, no bad voice acting to taint the mood, it is just you, your journey and a few other strange characters all helping, or hindering your quest.

It is through this attachment that you feel changing emotions with the varying environments, at one point you might be floating through the dunes, feeling the freedom of your character, at others points you might be in the dark, evading evil and moving through cover. When the awe of it all settles down, you can't help but feel sadness. As much as I understood the story near the end, there were so many questions for me left unanswered. For me it is this mystery that really made Journey special, it really showed off the power that video games can hold.

I recommend this game to anyone looking for something different.
