"Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life." –
Art Blakey
Mellow drum beats, bebop piano, the frenetic buzz of a trumpet solo and the sensual, throaty vocal style... Jazz is a genre of music that you either love or don't understand. And while there is no shortage of live music venues in Brisbane, jazz aficionados are often heard lamenting the lack of decent live jazz. Well lament no more, thanks to the staff and students at the
Queensland Conservatorium.
Jazz in the Pocket serves to showcase the talents of vocalists and instrumentalists at the Queensland Conservatorium. This event consists of a series of old fashioned, intimate jazz performances, with the performers and listeners enclosed within as cosy 'pocket' setting. So whether you prefer the walking bass or a good jazz scat, Jazz in the Pocket provides with a variety of performances.
South Bank's Music Lawn, located outside the Red Note Cafe at the Queensland Conservatorium, provides a secluded outdoor setting that allows for a cosy atmosphere. Listeners are seated comfortably at tables, while a generous dance floor allows the audience to either sit back and soak up the music, or to get up and have a dance.
This event is free to attend, and food and drinks are available for purchase at the Red Note Cafe. Jazz in the Pocket takes place on selected Thursday nights (see the website for dates), from 5.00pm – 7.00pm.
