The , also known as the JFF, returns to Perth with some new and classic Japanese movies and this is the very best of them and part of a huge national tour.

It is on throughout Australia and each city's programme is carefully curated by the Japan Foundation in Sydney. The 2017 Festival will present the most exciting new films direct from Japan, and these will include:

  • Comedies
  • Samurai and yakuza action
  • Manga adaptations
  • Romances
  • Drama
  • And much more

  • The Festival will open in true Japanese style with:
    [b]MUMON: THE LAND OF STEALTH[/b] and this is an action-packed film about a deadly Ninja with unmatched strength who accidentally triggers a deadly battle between a warlord's army and the Ninjas in his province.



    This movie will run from 6.45 pm to 9.10 pm on the 1st November, 2017.

    It is directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura, also known for Fish Story, and starring Satoshi Ohno (The Locked Room), and this is a gripping film which will have audiences on the edge of their seats!

    Some of the other highlights of the 2017 Perth Festival programme include:

  • BIRDS WITHOUT NAMES - this is a "visceral tale of lust, devotion and redemption" from Kazuya Shiraishi, who is known from The Devil's Path, and it is fresh from the Toronto International Film Festival.



  • This will be on Sunday 5th November at 1.15 pm.

  • TORI GIRL, which is a comedy about boy meets girl.



  • This is on Saturday, 4th November at 12.50 pm.

  • HER LOVE BOILS BATHWATER which is a drama about a single mother who grapples with the anguish of raising an adolescent daughter who is bullied at school.

  • Their situation takes a complicated turn when Futaba collapses at work and is diagnosed with terminal cancer.



    This is on the 5th November at 3.40 pm.

  • GUKOROKU - TRACES OF SIN, which is a mystery about a journalist who is going through a difficult time after being charged with child neglect.



  • This is on Friday the 3rd November at 8.20 pm.

  • MEMOIRS OF A MURDERER, which is about a killer who confesses and the anguish it causes an investigating officer.



  • This will be on the 2nd November from 6.15 pm to 8.20 pm.

    The Japan Foundation, Sydney is the Australian arm of the Japan Foundation, which was established by the Japanese government to promote cultural and intellectual exchange between Japan and other nations.

    They run a diverse range of programmes and events, including exhibitions, talks, events, grant programmes and Japanese language courses for all levels from beginner to advanced.

    The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 with a global network of 24 offices in 23 countries. The Australian office was started in 1978.
