The late Jim Henson's much loved Muppets are making a welcomed comeback this year, with a new feature film.
Simply entitled
The Muppets (2011), the first Muppet film in more then ten years is being directed by British writer/director James Bobin, who is best known writing and directing The 11 O'Clock Show, Da Ali G Show and Ali G in da USAiii, as well as co-creating Flight of the Conchords. Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller are credited with the script, previously they worked together on Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), which featured Segal's character Peter Bretter, creating A Taste of Love - a smash-hit Dracula puppet rock opera.
Disney, who have owned The Muppets franchise since 2004, are now starting promotion for the upcoming Muppet feature film, and most recently Kermit the Frog (who suspiciously hasn't aged at all), interviewed the
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides cast and crew.
Also, through the creation of the
Muppets Studio Youtube Channel , The Muppets have had a massive online presence. On this dedicated Youtube channel, recently produced Muppet short films are uploaded, and are subsequently watched by millions worldwide. One of the most watched videos is The Muppet take on Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, which won two Webby Awards - People's Voice Award for "Best Music Video" and "Best Viral Video.
Also getting in on The Muppets revival is Melbourne's own Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), with the just announced
It's The Muppet Show! public forum. ACMI, back in September 2008, had a special program
dedicated to Jim Henson , which included an extensive film program as well as special events, so this is not the first time the team at ACMI have shown love for Henson and his irrepressible band of classic characters.
The upcoming ACMI Live in the Studio event - It's The Muppet Show! will feature Josh Kinal and John Richards of
Boxcutters , an Australian television news and reviews website, alongside guest puppeteers. Kinal and Richards will explore the wonderful world of Jim Henson and how
