The Ipswich Historical Society is celebrating their Golden Jubilee on Saturday 8th October 2016 and all are invited to join in the festivities! Founded in October 1966, the Ipswich Historical Society continues to preserve and showcase the region's rich heritage and will commemorate their 50th anniversary with one of their biggest festivals yet.
Entry is FREE and there will be a jam-packed line-up of entertainment for all ages, including brass bands, fashion parades, bush poetry, real-life blacksmithing, magicians, a lantern parade, food stalls and a beer and wine bar!The event will begin at 10am with the Amberley Brass Band under gazebo in front of Cooneana Homestead , which was built for one of Ipswich's founding fathers in 1868.Against the backdrop of this historic home, Bush Poetry by Denbigh Stenzel will be performed and a Qld Mines Rescue Service rescue re-enactment will then follow.At midday, Mayor Paul Pisasale will officially open the festival. Throughout the day, event-goers can immerse themselves in Ipswich's fascinating history, with engaging
short history talks in 3 different locations. Topics include school rooms of the past; the 49-room Brynhyfryd Mansion (Welsh for 'pleasant hill') built on Blackstone Hill in 1891; history of Ipswich's water supplies; Cooneana and the people who lived there; Ned Kelly's connection with Ipswich; local cemeteries and their stories (which are not all ghostly).There will also be many interactive activities on offer, such as Blacksmith demonstrations with Martin Geddes in the smithy; Woodcraft demonstrations by Ipswich Woodcrafts Club; Weaving with yarn/sticks/paper for children at Brighton House; Games, roundabout and races for children run by West Moreton Scouts until 4pm, plus community market stalls, food and drink stalls, a costume competition and raffles.
In addition to roving entertainers, event-goers can also enjoy stage shows with Nickleby the Magician, Angus and Peter Smith string duet, Queensland Colonial Association Reverse Strip by Dorothy Walsh and Outtawak – comedy and song with Rob, Tony and Davo. Their show includes send ups and songs by the likes of Tom Jones, Kermit the Frog, Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, The Platters, John Denver, and many more!
The Ipswich Historical Society has also organised for visitors to park at Bundamba Race Course and travel free to the festival at the Cooneana Heritage Centre by Heritage Bus, with round trips offered every half hour. Those arriving by train will also be picked up at Booval train station.
