Mornington Peninsula's small coastal town of Rosebud celebrates International Women's Day this March, with an innovative festival, inviting members of the community to connect over a series of workshops and performances.

A Woman's Place is a mini-festival, now two years in, which celebrates local women's stories through theatre, music and dance.

This year's 4-day festival will take place at the Southern Peninsula Arts Centre, which will be transformed into a collection of pop-up op shops!

The festival kicks off with a morning tea, although not your average cuppa and cake gathering. Story and Plate will be set up amongst the pop-up op shops, where women are invited to bring a plate of food that holds a special meaning to them, and the story behind it.

"Over the course of two hours we will share our food and our stories, a simple act that will reconnect us to our sense of community." says local theatre maker Anthea Mackenzie, one of the organisers of A Woman's Place festival.

The stories shared will be recorded, transcribed and transformed into a verbatim style reading performed by actors Carole Patullo and Jane Bayly on International Women's Day.

The pop up op shops are in the theatre all day Saturday for the morning tea and subsequent workshops, and will be used for part of the performance of Right Here.

Speaking of workshops, a series of dance, singing and writing classes run by Dianne Reid, Ling Marra and Andrea Louise Thomas will take place over the course of the festival. You can choose to sign up for one workshop or all three.

"The day offers the chance for women to refill their creative cup and connect with other creatives living on the Peninsula", Anthea Mackenzie explains.

The Peninsula Writers' Club are writing a collaborative piece to be performed prior to the screening of the award winning documentary, Embrace, which will be screened on Wednesday 8 March at 7:30pm, with 50% of ticket sales going to the Rosebud Secondary College's Wellness Pavillion.

Dominique Garrard, a local musician who is about to tour as part of the duo, nyck, will be offering a music workshop focussing on song writing, improvisation and performance. Dom will then stay on and perform a few of her own songs during The Full Noise, a dedicated teen music night for girls.

A highlight of the festival will be the premiere of Right Here, a new theatre work created by Carole Patullo and Jane Bayly from stories shared by women who live on the Mornington Peninsula.

Tickets to any one of the activities are very reasonably priced and can be booked here .

A Woman's Place International Women's Day Arts Festival will run from 4 - 8 March 2017 at the Southern Peninsula Arts Centre in Rosebud.
