Sunday May 18 is , when we are encouraged to think about the place museums hold in our lives. Museums such as the South Australian Museum are wonderful Adelaide attractions because they offer something for people of all ages, from young children to the elderly.

A classic example is the National Railway Museum which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Kids in Adelaide love to ride the steam engines at the museum and to explore the old trains on display, while older people reminisce nostalgically about the old South Australian Railways carriages and signs from bygone days.

Museums in Adelaide also performs an important social function too, allowing us to remember the experiences of people who have gone before us. The Hostel Stories - Migrant Lives display at the Migration Museum has been a very moving exhibition from our former migrants, with many leaving comments about their personal experience in hostels on my article and at the Migration Museum.

The Army Museum also allows us to learn about the sacrifices our soldiers have made to ensure our safety and freedom, although kids are often more interested in exploring the tanks and military vehicles.

We're lucky to have in Adelaide a fantastic range of museums , and many of them are free or cost very little to enter. Local community museums such as at Unley , the Hindmarsh Museum , the South Australian Aviation Museum and the ETSA Museum are often heavily reliant on volunteers, so if you enjoy getting up close to the exhibits that might be something for you to do in your leisure time.

The country regions of South Australia are also fortunate to have a network of National Trust community museums such as the Beachport Museum . They offer a great opportunity to get a glimpse of a town's past history, and the locals are always happy to tell you their personal stories about the town too.

To help lure us into a museum on National Museum Day, there are several special Adelaide attractions this year. At the National Motor Museum admission has been discounted as part of an About Time History Festival promotion - adults get entry at kid's price of $5 on the day.

At the Mill Cottage Museum, bring your own historical items, or try to identify mystery items on display.

The Migration Museum is having a free workshop where you can explore the collection up close, or bring your own treasures, photos or stories along to share.

The Mount Gambier National Trust is holding a Guilty Indulgence Lunch at the Old Courthouse. It's the perfect chance to indulge yourself in some local produce, and maybe a glass of wine too.

Check here to find out more about , and don't forget to share your stories and tips about your favourite museums in Adelaide in the comments.
