The United States of America is the land that brought you the light bulb, the sewing machine, oil wells, the artificial heart, motor bikes and toilet paper. They're also responsible for cheese in a spray can, telemarketing, cheerleaders, breakfast pizza and the atomic bomb. Now that's what I call a mixed bag. You don't need to think all of this is worth celebrating, but if you have a hankering for a large serve (with fries of course) of Uncle Sam and all things American then get along to Independence Day American Celebrations at Riverlife on Saturday 7 July 2012.

[ADVERT] American Independence Day actually occurs on the 4th of July, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence following the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain during the American Revolution in 1776. In an interesting historical twist the second and third American presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who were also signatories to the declaration, both died on the same day – 4 July 1826 – exactly fifty years after the declaration.

Billed as "the all-American event of the century" (presumably only in Brisbane where, let's face it, there's not too much competition), Independence Day American celebrations will take over Kangaroo Point's Riverlife precinct with an explosion of red, white and blue entertainment, music, food and culture. We all know that nobody does over-the-top patriotism like the Americans so don't be shy. Get into the spirit and wear your cowboy boots and ten gallon hat, your cheerleader skirt and pom poms, or wrap yourself in the old Stars and Stripes.

Event Details
When: Saturday 7 July from 4pm until late.
Where: Riverlife. Naval Stores, Brisbane River Bikeway, Kangaroo Point.

You'll need to hurry though. Discounted tickets are already sold out. Standard and group tickets entitle you to entry to the celebrations, one food voucher and two drink vouchers. I'd better mention here that your food experience will be ballpark style, including southern fried chicken, Coney Island hotdogs, buffalo wings and cheeseburgers, all accompanied by those ubiquitous fries. And you can wash all that down with American beer, frozen daiquiris and tequila sunrises. Is it any wonder America is known as the "home of the brave"?
