In The Annex is a triple threat of a cafe - there's fabulous food, excellent coffee and a charming atmosphere. It's safe to say that there's no other cafe in Sydney like it. The plating of the food is delicate and intricate, likened more to fine dining, and the menu is based around fresh, seasonal and wild produce.

The place is eclectic, homey and playful. There's a clear concept of recycled materials and furnishings. Table water is poured from brown beer bottles. In the cabinet, dinosaur toys are propped around and on top of brownie chunks, creating a mini Jurassic Park-esque landscape. A minuscule ceramic blue pig casually sits near the salt and pepper on our table.

The food and drinks menu is succinct, which makes it easy. In The Annex recently received 3 stars in the Good Food Under $30 guide, and it's well-deserved.

The slow cooked lamb ($18) is completely different from what you would imagine. While most cafes would have a hearty, rustic approach to lamb for brunch, In the Annex takes it to a whole other level with daubs of dill yoghurt, shaved cucumber and radishes daintily assembled on the plate, reminiscent of a pretty garden. The dish is accompanied by triangles of pita bread and topped with small bits of black olive, adding a nice, salty touch.

Another winner is the baked eggs with rosemary and bread, topped with crunchy kale. It's a tasty dish made even taster with an extra side of bacon.

The roast potato salad ($16) is laced with ribbons of pickled zucchini and melted blobs of smoked cheddar. The salad is garnished with dill and another kind of greenery that looks very similar to dill but tastes nothing like it. Turns out In The Annex is super-friendly on Instagram (follow them here and see more of their beautiful creations) and answered a question of mine when I enquired about the greenery on my dish. It was sea blight, which they had picked from the Cooks River near Tempe. Now that's local - and wild. There's also a wonderful slice of toasted bread to go with the warm potato salad. Perfection.

When I see someone unpacking a breakfast burrito at the table next-door a wave of food envy washes over me. But there will always be next time.

At In The Annex, coffee is by Umami and tea is by T Totaler. Our Sunday brunch experience was excellent, except for a relatively long wait for our food. It was entirely worth the wait though.
