Located in Melbourne's little Italy, Lygon St, Carlton Il Gambero serves up authentic Italian cuisine. There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Lygon St, so knowing which is best is a great advantage. Only recently re-opened after a fire, Il Gambero has been around for years. My first visit there was almost ten years ago. Since then, it has become a favourite in my family, with many birthdays and late night dinners spent there.
The owners work in the restaurant, and like to mingle with the diners, which creates a great friendly atmosphere. The pizzas are great. For me its all about the base, and Il Gambero have perfected that. They don't overload the pizza with toppings either.
The pasta is fresh and cooked just right. There is a huge selection of different sauces, from traditional bolognese to cabonara or saltati, and not only is Il Gambero tasty, it is affordable too.
