Brrrr it's cold in here, so why not warm up this season at Icehouse, the latest addition to Melbourne's Docklands Precinct? Boasting two Olympic sized ice rinks, state of the art sound and light systems, a cafe, bar and function rooms, this is much more than just a sporting facility.

Whether you're a beginner or enthusiast, there's something for everyone at Icehouse, especially on the weekends.

The 80s Countdown on Friday nights is an absolute ripper way to get the weekend started. You'll have a ball skating around the rink while grooving to some rad retro tunes. And let's face it, when else will you have the opportunity – nay the excuse—to dust off the old legwarmers?

Parents can come in on a Saturday afternoon and relax with a cuppa while the kids enjoy the Ice Sk8 Party, an underage disco event like no other. And from 7:30pm until midnight, the Frost party allows skaters to cruise around the rink to the latest chart toppers care of Icehouse's resident DJ. There are competitions too. Maybe you'll take out the 'Best Dressed Skater' award? Saturday nights out haven't looked this good in ages!

For a low-key Sunday skate session, come in for brunch. Sunday Brunch skating sessions include a delicious mid-morning meal, a couple of hours of skating and skate hire.

Oh, and you cannot go past Tight Tuesdays for value! The budget-conscious (and everybody else) can enjoy the facilities at half price!

If you're worried about your skating abilities, or lack thereof, don't fret – Icehouse provides skating lessons for all ages and abilities. Novice skaters can sign up to learn the basics, while those with intermediate or advanced abilities can improve their skills. All lessons are given by fully qualified instructors and consist of a 30-minute lesson and 30 minutes of ice practice. Students can also be trained in ice sports like ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating and curling.

If it is your first time, here are some tips:

• Wear thin socks. This will help you fit comfortably in your skates;
• Dress the part. It does get cold in there, so wear warm, comfortable clothing. (It's a good idea to dress in layers because you'll warm up after doing a few laps of the rink!) Mittens or gloves are a good idea to keep hands warm;
• When skating, keep knees bent and hold your arms to your side for good balance;
• Have fun!

So slip on some skates, strap on the protective gear (you don't want to take your chances!) and take a spin around the ice.
