I, Daniel Blake – Film Review (BBC First British Film Festival 2016)

I, Daniel Blake, is screening as part of the British Film Festival 2016 throughout Australia. The drama is a Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or-winner, from acclaimed British director Ken Loach, known for so many other brilliant films.

The film is based on research and interviews by the screenwriter Paul Laverty and is a very moving portrayal of a 59 year old carpenter and widower, Daniel Blake who, because of illness, suddenly has to go through the tough public system in England.

The story follows his attempts to claim benefits for the first time in his life, in order to survive and shows the indignities that he goes through during this trying process.

Added to his problems is the fact that he is computer illiterate in a world that is "digital".

The film has both pathos, and humour, and is told bluntly and with a realness that is both sad and enchanting. The film shows how this process can strip a person of their dignity, where they even have to sell furniture in order to put food on the table, because of "red tape" and "rules".

The main character played by Dave Johns, is portrayed brilliantly and it is hard to believe that Dave is a stand-up comedian in real life! Also in this film is Hayley Squires who has also appeared in Call the Midwife, and now portrays Katie, the mother of two children who Daniel befriends. Katie and her family have been forced to move many miles away from her hometown, London, in order to get a State flat.

Ken loach has directed about 35 great films in his career, and these include such masterpieces as Cathy Come Home, Kes, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Looking for Eric, and so many more masterpieces.

The following is an interview with Ken Loach, director of this film - it is quite a long interview, but very interesting.
