The Hummingbird Bakery make cupcakes like American grannies are supposed to make. That's their gimmick - from churning their own butter for their Chocolate icing, to decorating their little icing covered tops with individual love and care.

Some people swear by the Carrot Cupcakes with their mix of fresh carrots, walnuts and nutmeg, some people love the classic Vanilla and Chocolates with their star and sprinkle festivity, but the Red Velvets with their not too sweet flavour and dense but moist texture are always popular in the Hummingbird queue.

If you're not sure you can try a few mini cupcakes, or let them decide for you and go for the cupcake of the day. As hinted at above there's a chance you'll have to queue - especially if you visit the Portobello Road store on Saturday. The other stores are in South Kensington and Soho.

They do cakes, cookie, slices, brownies and pies too - pecan and pumpkin pie are other American granny classics they do well.
