Hum Drum Collective was born from the desire to utilise underused and underappreciated spaces in Brisbane, especially around the CBD. The creators of this creative initiative wanted to fill these spaces with art and music and performance.

Hum Drum is their first project and has been running on Saturdays in the Atrium of Anzac Arcade, Brisbane City. The atrium has a beautiful glass ceiling that provides the area with natural light, and the tall space has the natural reverb of a cathedral. It made perfect sense to hold their first Hum Drum event in this stunning space.

The founder of Hum Drum is also a proprietor at The White Cat Coffee in Anzac Arcade and Georgina is keen to see this beautiful space filled with creative people doing their thing in a like-minded community.

Each Saturday the Atrium transforms into a safe space for performers with an open mic.

People are encouraged to come along and share their creative sides with others. If you play music, are into poetry or slam poetry, are a comedian, a storyteller or have a unique way of showing creative self expression or maybe you're into interpretive dance - you are invited to Hum Drum.

Equally, anyone who loves to paint, draw or simply appreciates the cultural atmosphere of entertainment and creativity in motion are also warmly welcome and encouraged to come along. Hum Drum is about supporting artists, musicians and performers and they all love an appreciative audience.

Don't think you have to participate or get up on stage to come along. You can hang out, order a delicious coffee from The White Cat Coffee shop and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Bring your friends and make a day of it.

If you're interested in performing, Hum Drum Collective provides a PA and you can have 15 minutes of time on the stage showing off your material which can be original or an interpretation.

Hum Drum Collective also encourages the exhibition of artistic works with an art market and exhibiting space. They run as a not for profit and don't charge table fees to ensure no starving artist is having to outlay at risk. Instead, they operate on an honesty based commission which has yielded small amounts to put towards running costs. So if you've got your own original art to exhibit and sell, get in contact with Hum Drum Collective and find out how to get involved.

Don't be shy. Put yourself out there. You could be the next rising star of Brissy!

When you come along expect to see cushions and blankets along the floor which you are welcome to sit on. Alternatively, if the mood strikes, you may like to stretch out and take a moment to appreciate the skylight above while enjoying the creative atmosphere.

There's also a piece of art - a tree with stained glass - that was gifted to the atrium from the 1988 expo. You may enjoy taking some time to admire this sculpture as you take in the creative atmosphere of this unique initiative.

Performers will be there jamming on guitars, didgeridoo, violin, ukulele, drums and more. They have had Canadian stand up comedians (that they call stand up Canadians), slam poets, traditional poets, improv and capella singers.

Everyone is welcome!

Artists that exhibit have presented very small sculptures, very large canvases and prints and originals in multiple styles as you can see below. Beautiful and expressive art that you could make your very own.

The future of Hum Drum is looking at even more spaces with filling any empty CBD shops with pop up galleries, creating outdoor performance and gallery spaces in public parks and even starting a temporary art hub and performance space in a brand new shipping container village.

Hum Drum is run by artists, performers and enthusiasts with experience in activating spaces and providing opportunities for lifting others up and seeing everyone succeed.

And if you're an actor, a play write or a performer, put your work out there. It's 15 minutes to show your skills, act out conflict in the moment, improvise and create a connection with your audience.

Hum Drum Collective is held each Saturday in the Atrium, Anzac Arcade from 10am-1:30pm, so come along and check it out.

You'll have a creative fun time.

To find out more about Hum Drum Collective, you can go to their website, check them out on Instagram or see them on Facebook. Alternatively, just rock up to Hum Drum on a Saturday and enjoy it live!

So come along to Hum Drum Collective regardless of your skill level and join the fun because everyone is welcome.

Share. Create. Grow.

And support an artist to reach their full potential.

Well researched! Thanks, I was wondering what was going on there. And White Cat is a good cafe too, nice meals and ethical.
