These days children love to play on the internet, whether it be Facebook games or just random online games.
The internet is full of content that children should be shielded from including older people, foul language, viruses, false content and more.
Having three boys that like to use the net, I have some easy ways to make the internet safe for them so that they don't wander into any sites they shouldn't or view anything foul.
Set up Net Nanny, which is a very protective net service which blocks out anything involving swearing, nudity or violent. If your child types in a website (out of curiosity) such as www.violence.com then Net Nanny will block that site. It also works with Youtube Videos and any text that's on a website.
Go into your internet firewall settings and type in any websites that you don't wish for your child to go on. You can type in random websites that could pop up, or maybe block Youtube if they like to watch videos on there excessively.
Switch off the WIFI router box before you go to sleep (if they have internet access on another device). It allows for everybody to have some down time and keep away from the internet.
Warn children about fake advertisements such as "You are the 100th viewer on this website, click here to claim your prize". My kids have been fooled many times and begged me to give my details so they could win something, however I know it's just a scam.
Get a pop up blocker, which blocks pop-ups when you go on a website. These will block other websites coming up and advertisements that are scams.
Check your computers' history, especially after children have used it. Sometimes kids might wander off to a different website, out of curiosity so it's best to check what they have been doing on the computer. (Don't tell children how to get to the history settings, as they can wipe their history from the computer themselves, and then you'll never know).
Have a list up near the computer or laptop of which websites are appropriate for kids to go on, and if they find a new website then check it out first.
Good websites for kids to play on are Club Penguin, Habbo Hotel, Runescape, The Simpsons, Angry Birds and more.
Games that were there are online chat, such as Club Penguin & Runescape, find a way so that they cannot type messages or view other people's messages. It's safer and they won't be able to see if someone writes something inappropriate or tries to ask them for their personal details.
