Many Queenslanders are eager to help out in the aftermath of the floods that devastated a large part of Queensland. Here's where your donations of time or money will help most.
Register yourself as a general volunteer at
Volunteering Queensland (or call (07) 3002 7600 if you cannot access the website) or
Extreme Weather Heroes, who work specifically with extreme weather situations. You may be called upon to work in the field, to help sort donations or to provide administrative and technical support to co-ordinators.
The
RSPCA has been overwhelmed and seeks foster parents for stray pets and animals who cannot stay in evacuation centres. If you are able to look after a pet, contact the RSPC by e-mailing
floods@rspcaqld.org.au with your name, contact details, location and information about what sort of animals and how many you can accommodate.
The Queensland Police are still seeking volunteering to work shifts filling sandbags. See their
Facebook page for information on the locations that require volunteers. Volunteers must wear enclosed shoes, preferably work boots, and light coloured or high visibility clothing. Gloves are recommended.
Many residents are using
Gumtree to broadcast free accomodation and other offers of help. Gumtree ads are posted free of charge.
You can still make monetary donations online, over the phone, through the mail or in person; all the information is
here. Charities are no longer accepting donations of goods; the Red Cross suggests selling your second hand goods at a garage sale, at the market or on eBay, and donating the proceeds to the flood appeal.
You can remain updated on volunteering opportunities, as well as information about the floods, by following the
Brisbane City Council twitter account. You do not need a twitter account to access this.
