So you want to have a garage sale? What do you do first? These few simple tips can deliver a successful sale, clear out some clutter and maybe make you a little cash.

First, people have to be able to find you.

We have all seen those signs that people put up, the hand written ones with small lettering that you can barely see. Time has been spent attaching them to poles and fences yet you can only catch a quick glimpse driving by. You can make out "Garage Sale" and think 'great - but where is it?'

Putting addresses on these signs isn't really helpful. The sign owner knows where they live. But do you? That address will mean nothing unless you are familiar with the street already. Most people wouldn't be bothered to go back for a second look. You need to capture people's attention right awaywhen they first see your sign.

Newsagents and art stores have a large supply of neon paper. With a large black marker write the words GARAGE SALE with a large arrow >>>>>>>> underneath pointing the way. People can see this in seconds as they flash by your sign. LEAD THEM. If there is an important intersection have a sign there, at the roundabout show them the way through.

Take a drive as if you were trying to find your house - come at it from more than one direction and you will see the best spots to put your signs . With a little work it will make your day worthwhile. And please go back and get your signs - you can use them again and you help keep litter at bay.

Advertising is free on Gumtree and Buy and Sell Australia . Let people know where you are, the date and time of your sale, giving an end time.

Now as is often the case people will put out everything they want to get rid of, including little Timmies old broken toys, the last chipped cup in the set, old doll clothes that have seen better days and things that are not saleable. And they want big bucks for them. If you have seen one of these sales chances are you drove right on by. You don't really want someone else's broken stuff.

Ask yourself what you would buy. A second hand set of golf clubs, an old table to refinish, a set of weights or maybe you are a student trying to start your independent life by buying a set of mismatched dishes. A garage sale would be a perfect place to look.

The point is - make it worth everyone's time. You are trying to clear out your clutter not make a fortune in the garage sale business. Price things reasonably and look at things objectively. Have fun and let people find you. You will unload that garage full of stuff, make a bit of money and people will walk off with some treasures.
