It's that time of year again when we barrack for one State of Origin team or the other. This annual event is the pinnacle of the Australian Rugby League football calendar and features a best of three games between players, who represent the state (Queensland or New South Wales) where they played their first senior rugby league game.

State of Origin Dates

Get your diaries out and mark down the following dates:

Game 1 – Wednesday 1st June 2016 – ANZ Stadium Sydney
Game 2 - Wednesday 22nd June 2016 – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
Game 3 – Wednesday 13th July 2016 – ANZ Stadium Sydney

Dress the Part

If you are a serious fan than you can purchase an official jersey from the NRL Shop or any of the good sporting shops in your city. If you want to get into the spirit of things, then you can purchase a range of supporter apparel from the State of Origin shop or from your local two-dollar shop. My local shop had face paint, fake eye lashes, temporary tattoos, fake mohawks and wigs, and flags. The maroon selection was outselling the blue selection by a long shot.

Party Decorations

If you are looking for ideas to decorate your house, then you can order balloons and other party decorations in your team's colour from:
  • Party Hut
  • Parties in Packages
  • Party Time
  • Party Food Ideas

The best State of Origin party I went to we ordered takeaway pizzas and stood around watching the game on my neighbour's big screen television. They ordered garlic bread and a range of pizzas in different flavours. There was fruit juice, soft drink and beers to drink. We all chipped in to help pay for the cost.

If you are going to order takeaway plan ahead and put your order in early, otherwise you might be turned away as it is one of their busiest nights. Last year I tried to buy some Goat Pie Guy pies from the markets and missed out because he had sold out before 10am.

A good alternative is to put some frozen pizzas or meat pies in the oven. Some other ideas of easy food to prepare are potato chips, sausage rolls, or chicken wings.

How do you celebrate The State of Origin?

    Go Queenslander!
