On August 9th, readers can rejoice – it's National Book Lovers Day. It's time to celebrate everything you love about books from
shopping for them to making crafts out of them. Whether you've been an avid reader for years or you're just starting to find the joy in reading more often, there are quite a few ways to celebrate in NYC.
Buy and sell books
If you've never been to
Strand you're missing out. The place is huge and has books inside and out. You can purchase a pile of books and barely make a dent in your wallet. Before you go, raid your bookshelves and grab all the books you don't want and bring them along. They buy your old books, but don't take donations. If there's any place to start National Book Lovers Day, Strand is it.
Attend an author event
There are numerous book signings and events all around New York City. Rather than visit individual bookstore websites to get a rundown on who is going to be doing an event, check out
Authorstrack.com . They list author events from all around the city. Currently, the only listing for August 9th is Rosanne Cash who will have a book reading and book signing event at Barnes and Noble on East 17th Street.
Make a book purse
Choose an old book from your collection and follow the easy directions from
HGTV to make a book purse. You likely already have most of the items at home including cardboard, ribbon, glue and a small amount of fabric. The project allows you to recycle an unwanted item and get a new accessory in the process.
Visit the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
Head down to the mostly volunteer run
Housing Works Bookstore Cafe on Crosby Street where you can relax, shop and do some good all in one place. It's a regular style cafe, but you can shop for books as well as movies and music while you're there. All of the profits go to Housing Works.
Although Book Lovers Day is only on August 9th, every day is a good excuse to head to a bookstore or library. While you're out, engage in conversation with other book lovers – you never know when you can come across your new favorite book.
