What better way to enjoy the glitz and glamour of the 82nd Academy Awards than by hosting your own Oscars party?

This is one shindig where the fun begins even before the big night. To get all the lucky invitees in the mood, send them a themed evite with a ballot form attached. Tell them to mark their tips and return them to you the day before the party. When the show's over, you'll then award a dummy Oscar or trophy or some other prize to the best guesser.

One of the most hotly disputed contests of any Academy Awards is the fashion stakes, so you and your friends will have to go all out too. Instruct everybody to dress like their favourite star or character, or perhaps to wear their gaudiest outfit. Whatever theme you go with, you'll be bestowing a Costume Design Oscar on the best dressed.

To welcome your guests, try to put together some sort of red carpet. Craft stores like Spotlight stock material that should allow you to do the job. Cheap and nasty is fine – just as long as it sets the mood. As they pass through the door, give them the paparazzi treatment by calling out their name and dazzling them with a flashing camera.

Once inside, they'll be impressed by your decorations, which should consist of things like movie posters, glitter, and gold and silver stars. At this time of year Spotlight and most party shops stock a good selection of Hollywood-themed decorations. They'll also be blown away by your movie-themed food. Examples include Avatar Blue Jelly Shots (Avatar), Blind Cider (The Blind Side), Julienne & Julia Vegetables with Dips (Julie & Julia), District 9 Johannesburgers (District 9), Inglourious Custard (Inglourious Basterds), Up in the Air Chicken Wings (Up in the Air) and The Lovely Bones Platter (The Lovely Bones), on which to house those discarded chicken bones. No doubt you'll be able to think of some fun ideas as well.

Of course, the most important part is the ceremony itself. So make sure that all your guests are able to see – and hear – the TV. While you're at it, take care that everybody has something comfortable enough to sit on for several hours, be it a couch, seat, cushion or beanbag.
